From 1924 to 1988 were the glory days. It all started with Knute Rockne who coached Notre Dame to its 1st championship in 1924. Five years later he coached them back to back national champions in 1929 and 1930. Then in 1943 under a new coach Frank Leahy Notre Dame reclamied thier mountion. Then 3 years later he lead them to 3 championships in the spand of 1946 to 1949. Ara Parseghian took over the rains and lead the team to two championships in 1966 and 1973. Then in 1977 Dan Devine helped coach the Fighting Irish to a championship. Then it was a whole 11 years before Lou Holtz lead the Irish back on top.
In 1943 Notre Dame had its 1st Heisman Trophy winner Angelo Bertelli who played back. Four years later John Lujack won it also playing back. In 1949 Leon Hart who played end both ways won the trophy. In 1953 John Lattner won the trophy playing back. Three years later Paul Hornung won the trophy he was a back also. John Huarte playing back won it in 1964. Tim Brown was the last Notre Dame player to win it in 1987 and was the only receiver.
